Psalm 91 – “The Cover” Prayer

Divine Protection for Every Season

A soft watercolor illustration of an open Bible with golden protective light and wing-like shapes representing divine covering.

Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful Scriptures of protection in the Bible. It speaks of refuge, deliverance, angelic assistance, and covering under the shadow of the Almighty. Many believers refer to it as “The Cover” because it forms a spiritual shield over individuals, families, and territories.

This page is inspired by Elisha Goodman’s emphasis on protective warfare prayer, but the content written below is entirely in my own words. Use this page whenever you need spiritual reinforcement, protection, or peace over your home, your life, or your loved ones.

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress:

My God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,

And from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust:

His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night;

Nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness;

Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand;

But it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold

And see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge,

Even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee,

Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee,

To keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands,

Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder:

The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:

I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:

I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him,

And shew him my salvation.

Prayer

Psalm 91 reveals several spiritual truths about divine protection:

  • God Himself becomes your dwelling place — a safe refuge from danger.

  • His faithfulness forms a shield that stops arrows, attacks, and hidden traps.

  • You are covered beneath His wings, symbolising intimacy and safety.

  • Angels are assigned to guard and accompany you, keeping your steps from harm.

  • You become untouchable by terror, pestilence, fear, or darkness.

  • When you call upon God, He answers, delivers, honours, and satisfies you.

These promises are not passive — they are activated through faith, confession, and intentional prayer.

A Prayer of Protection Based on Psalm 91

Father, I thank You that You are my refuge and my place of safety.
Today, I take my position under the shadow of the Almighty.

I declare that Your presence is my shield.
No hidden trap, no sickness, no accident, and no evil assignment will come near me or my household.
Your truth surrounds me like armor.

Let Your wings cover me.
Let Your angels be stationed around me, keeping watch over every step I take.
Wherever I go today, let Your light go before me, behind me, and all around me.

I decree that fear has no place in my life.
Darkness has no authority over me.
Destruction has no access to my environment.
I live under supernatural protection.

Lord, deliver me from every danger I cannot see.
Lift me above every threat of the enemy.
Strengthen me with long life, peace, and honour according to Your promise.

Thank You for being my Cover — my Protector, my Guard, and my Defender.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection

Psalm 91 is God’s covenant promise of protection.
Whenever fear tries to rise, speak this Scripture, enforce your covering, and remind your spirit that you dwell under the shadow of the Almighty.
