Understanding Spiritual Aromas, Angelic Presence, and Atmospheric Signals

The spiritual realm communicates in many forms, and one of the most overlooked is scent. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through fragrances, fire, incense, and perfumes—each releasing meaning, presence, and spiritual activity. These study notes follow the message closely, documenting every core idea on how scents operate in the natural and spiritual realm, how angels and demons use aroma, and how believers can discern what atmosphere is being activated around them.

This study is based on the sermon “Scents and Spirits” delivered by Prophet Lovy Elias on 15 October 2020.

Study Notes

1. Introduction: Why Scents Matter Spiritually

  • Scents communicate in both the natural and spiritual world.

  • Every scent carries meaning; every scent is a signal.

  • God uses scents to reveal Himself, and demons use scents to manifest themselves.

  • A scent is a language and a messenger.

  • Scents travel faster than sound.

  • Scents bypass intellectual reasoning and speak directly to the soul.

  • Smell is the only sense that cannot be blocked; there are no spiritual “earplugs” for scent.

  • Scent is tied to memory, emotion, identity, and recognition.

  • Angels, demons, and spiritual beings carry unique scents.

  • The spiritual world is “perfumed”—not metaphorically, but literally.

  • Atmospheres change through scents.

2. Scriptural Foundation: God and Fragrance

  • In the Old Testament, God revealed Himself through aroma.

  • Burnt sacrifices created a smell that ascended to God.

  • God responded to the scent of sacrifice.

  • In Revelation, incense represents prayers rising before God.

  • Noah’s offering after the flood is highlighted:

    • The Bible says God smelled a “sweet savor.”

    • God made a covenant after smelling the offering.

  • Scents and covenants are connected.

  • God associates fragrance with remembrance, mercy, and response.

3. Human Beings Carry Spiritual Smells

  • Every person carries a spiritual fragrance—either pleasant or unpleasant.

  • A person's spirit gives off an aroma that reveals their state.

  • The scent can reveal:

    • purity

    • sin

    • deliverance

    • bondage

    • worship

    • disobedience

  • Angels can smell your spiritual condition.

  • Demons also smell your condition.

  • People can be “spiritually stinking” while appearing well in the natural.

  • There are individuals who smell like:

    • death

    • destruction

    • fear

    • anger

    • rejection

    • bitterness

  • These are not natural odors—they are spiritual fragrances.

4. Angels and Their Scents

  • Angels have distinct scents.

  • Some angels smell like:

    • fresh rain

    • flowers

    • fire

    • incense

    • wind

    • perfume

  • Each angelic order carries unique fragrance signatures.

  • Archangels carry strong scents that fill an entire space.

  • When an angel enters, the atmosphere changes.

  • Angels use scent to announce their presence.

  • Sometimes before an angel appears, a scent comes first.

5. Demons and Their Scents

  • Demons also have recognizable odors.

  • Demonic scents include:

    • sulfur

    • rot

    • sewage

    • burning

    • stagnant water

    • foul, oppressive odors

  • A demonic smell reveals the spirit behind it.

  • When people manifest demonic activity, the scent in the room can change.

  • Deliverance often exposes a demonic odor before the spirit leaves.

  • Houses, clothes, and objects can carry spiritual smells.

6. Why Spirits Use Smell

  • Scent is the fastest form of spiritual communication.

  • Spirits use scent to:

    • signal presence

    • claim territory

    • attract

    • repel

    • align

    • warn

    • influence moods

  • Smell bypasses rational decision-making.

  • Spirits use aroma to bypass logic and access the soul.

  • Just as God uses fragrance to draw, demons use odor to manipulate.

7. Jesus and the Scent of Worship

  • The woman with the alabaster box released worship through fragrance.

  • The entire house was filled with the smell of the ointment.

  • Worship has a smell in the spirit.

  • Worship attracts divine presence.

  • Fragrance in worship demonstrates:

    • purity

    • sacrifice

    • honor

    • brokenness before God

  • Jesus said her act would be remembered everywhere the gospel is preached.

8. Daniel, Fasting, and Spiritual Aroma

  • When Daniel fasted, his body was weakened, but his spirit emitted a stronger fragrance.

  • The angel said:

    • “From the first day you humbled yourself, your words were heard.”

  • Humility has a smell.

  • Fasting releases a specific aroma that heaven recognizes.

9. Elijah and the Smell of Fire

  • Elijah’s altar produced a scent through sacrifice and fire.

  • Angels respond to scents aligned with obedience.

  • The fire of God carries a fragrance of purity and holiness.

  • Fire reveals what kind of spirit is present.

  • Divine fire smells different from strange fire.

10. Strange Fire and Wrong Fragrance

  • Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire.

  • Their offering produced a scent God did not accept.

  • Wrong spiritual fragrance can provoke judgment.

  • Not every offering smells good before God.

  • Obedience determines aroma.

11. Cornelius and the Smell of Prayer

  • Cornelius’ prayers and alms “rose up as a memorial before God.”

  • Prayer has a smell.

  • Acts of giving, when done correctly, release aroma recognized in heaven.

  • Spiritual consistency produces fragrance.

  • Heaven responds to the “aroma of remembrance.”

12. How to Discern with Smell

  • A believer can be trained by the Spirit to detect:

    • angelic presence

    • demonic presence

    • atmospheric shifts

    • spiritual invitations

    • the aroma of prayer

    • the aroma of worship

    • the aroma of disobedience

  • Smell is a prophetic tool.

  • Discernment is not guessing—it is sensing.

13. Why Scents Matter in Deliverance

  • Deliverance exposes hidden odors.

  • Spirits reveal themselves through smell.

  • Certain spirits cannot hide their fragrance.

  • Discernment through smell helps:

    • identify the spirit

    • identify the bondage

    • know when the spirit is leaving

    • know when the atmosphere is cleansed

14. Final Teaching Point Before the Sermon Shifts

  • Scents, spirits, and atmospheres are interconnected.

  • A believer must become sensitive to the spiritual smell of:

    • their environment

    • their relationships

    • their home

    • their clothing

    • their worship life

  • Everything spiritual has a fragrance that reveals its source.
